Singrauli accorded as 50th district of Madhya Pradesh
Bhopal, May 24: Singrauli was on Saturday accorded the status of 50th district of Madhya Pradesh. Culled from the entrails of sprawling Sidhi, the political base of the venerable "Dao saheb" Arjun Singh, his son Ajay and young politician Ashok Shah, the hiving of tribal-dominated Singrauli had been a long-standing local demand for predominantly logistical reasons. Residents of Devsar, Chitrangi, and Singrauli blocks were compelled to travel over 150 km to reach the district headquarters. Singrauli will be the seventh district within the Rewa division with its headquarters at Waidhan. Notified on the 16th of this month, it is the second district to be created under the BJP rule after Alirajpur (Jhabua).
Making the formal announcement, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan told a local gathering that given its rich mineral and forest wealth, efforts would be made to make Singrauli the country’s most-developed district.
The chief minister said, "We want it to become the country’s energy capital. Scientific tapping of vast natural resources could also help it become the Singapore of India."
The Rs 20,000-crore Reliance ADA power project coming up at Sasan is already attracting some attention. "Pattas" would be given to tribals occupying forest lands prior to December 2005 to enable them practice uninterrupted farming.
The chief minister also promised to withdraw petty criminal cases against adivasis to spare them the trouble of making the rounds of courts. Upcoming industries in the private sector would be requested to provide a liberal number of jobs to local youths.
Sanctioned on the occasion was a 200-bed hospital, and Rs 3 crores for the building of the collector’s office besides another crore for infrastructure development.
Sixteen new districts were created in undivided MP during the Digvijay Singh regime.
